Contrary to popular belief, the holidays are a great time to sell.

Why are the holidays a good time to list and sell your house? Low inventory and serious buyers are just two reasons. It may seem to most people that spring would be the best time to list and sell your home, but I'll suggest that the holidays could also be a great option for the following reasons:

1. There's less inventory during the winter. When there's less competition on the market, that can be the best time to list your home and sell it for the most amount of money. The lack of competition means that buyers don't have as much to choose from, so if your home shows well and is priced correctly, it will likely sell quickly.

2. Winter buyers are oftentimes more serious. I frequently tell people that buyers aren't out during the winter months walking through snow and looking at houses unless they’re serious about buying a home, so winter months are a great time to find committed buyers.

”Low inventory and serious buyers are just two reasons.”

3. Your home has more of a warm and cozy feeling during the holiday months. This is often a time when people gather around fireplaces, drink hot chocolate, and eat cookies in their homes. Homes smell and feel better than they do any other time of year, and the season creates a cozy vibe that most buyers love.

4. Neighborhoods look festive and inviting. If a buyer is driving down the street after dark and sees your neighbors’ houses all decked out in their Christmas lights and decorations, they’ll be more likely to think your location looks inviting. This is more common during the holiday season.

5. Some buyers are dealing with year-end job transfers. Lots of companies will move employees at the end of the year and want to get their employees settled in their new positions before January. If those employees have kids in school, they’ll want to get their kids settled during December so they can start school in January, which means they’ll be looking for a home now.

The bottom line is that no one wants their home to languish on the market, nor do they want to lower their asking price. These things are less likely during the holidays than you might’ve thought. If you or anyone you know is considering waiting for the spring to sell their house, please give me a call or email. I’d love to discuss the benefits of selling during winter.
